Self care

I’m going to get straight to the point.

Self-care is a necessity, not a luxury.

It’s not a fad or a phase.

You don’t need loads of money or even lots of time.

You just need to agree that your physical, mental and emotional well-being is important.

Yes, some people may think it is an overused phrase but it doesn’t take away the fact that it needs to be part of everyone’s life.

I truly believe that if you’re not practising good self-care habits then life is going to feel harder and functioning on a daily basis is going to be difficult.

So building self-care into your daily routine is crucial to your well-being and the great news is it also helps to build your confidence and resilience

So what is self-care?

Self-care refers to any activity or practice that we do to take care of our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It can be as simple as getting enough sleep.

There have been many periods during my life as a mum where interrupted and disrupted sleep have been the norm. During those times, I lack energy, I am unable to focus and I just drift through the day. Which feels like a waste.

However, I know that when I’ve had a good night’s sleep my day feels easier, I can see more clearly what is in front of me and I make better decisions.

Mum, Maria Andreas Newman

Self-care is about doing the things that keep your human batteries strong and fully charged like eating well, moving and taking time to do things that get you in a state of happiness.

It’s really quite simple, if you are practising self-care then you will experience improved mental health, reduced stress, increased productivity and better overall health than if you don’t.

But what’s self-care got to do with confidence and resilience?

Now in our daily lives, we will encounter various challenges and life will throw us the odd curveball. Challenges that might frustrate us, make us feel awkward and push us out of our comfort zone. However, developing confidence and resilience can help us navigate our life’s challenges with greater ease.

Confidence is the belief in oneself and one’s abilities, whilst resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks and overcome challenges.

Self-care is essential for building both confidence and resilience. When we take care of ourselves, we feel better physically, mentally, and emotionally. This can lead to increased self-esteem and self-worth, which are essential components of confidence. Additionally, self-care practices like mindfulness and meditation can help us develop greater emotional resilience and the ability to cope with stress and setbacks.

So by prioritising self-care, we are better equipped to handle life’s challenges and setbacks.

Improved mental health

Self-care practices like meditation, mindfulness, and exercise can help improve mental health and reduce stress and anxiety.

So pick an activity which you enjoy doing and will fit naturally into your regular routine. Personally, I mix and match. I start the day with some meditation. During the day I’ll either go for a run, go for a walk or go to my kickboxing class.

Take some time now to confirm what practices are best for you and your life.

Increased productivity and motivation

When we take care of ourselves, we have more energy and motivation to tackle our goals and achieve success.

It’s all about doing what is necessary to feel good physically, mentally and emotionally. It’s about taking a holistic approach.

What makes you feel good? What practice helps to recharge your batteries?

Improved self-esteem and self-worth

Practising self-care can help us feel better about ourselves, which can lead to increased self-esteem and self-worth.

When you feel good on the inside you’ll radiate that good feeling on the outside. Your world will look and feel so much better if you’re taking the time to put in place habits that protect you, like setting boundaries, as well as those that help you to refill your cup.

Which good habits are you nurturing? Which habits do you need to replace?

Better coping skills

Self-care practices like mindfulness and meditation can help us develop better coping skills and the ability to bounce back from setbacks.

It’s about being in a state that allows you to respond to life instead of reacting to what is going on around you. It’s about implementing practices that allow you to nurture inner peace.

So you see, self-care is not just this thing we’re told to do. It’s essential in life and it helps in building confidence and resilience. When we prioritise self-care, we are better equipped to handle life’s challenges and achieve our goals. By practising self-care regularly, we can improve our mental and physical health, increase productivity and motivation, and develop greater emotional resilience. So, take some time for yourself today and make self-care a priority. Your mind, body and soul will thank you for it and you will be able to navigate life from a better place.
