Five Steps to Finding Yourself Again and Regaining Your Personal Identity

During our lifetime we will experience many life events which will make us question who we are.
The first time this happened to me was when I became a mum. I underestimated how this would affect me and how my need to protect our new addition would be all consuming leaving no time for just me.
It then happened again when I decided to take voluntary redundancy from my successful corporate career of 17 years. I loved my job but at the same time I knew it was time to move on. The problem was, I had only ever worked for one company and so venturing out alone was scary.
At the time, I had no idea how important personal identity is.
You see, personal identity is the foundation of who we are as individuals. It is a complex combination of our values, beliefs, passions, personality traits, and relationships with others.
However, at times, especially when we’re going through a life event, we can feel disconnected from ourselves and struggle to find our way back to our true selves.
The loss of personal identity can be a disorienting and uncomfortable experience. Knowing who you are is your foundation. If you don’t have a solid foundation, life can feel uncertain and challenging but you can do something about it.
If you are feeling lost or disconnected from your true self, then I can help you. There are steps you can take to rediscover your personal identity.

By following these steps, you will find your way back which will help you to rebuild your solid foundation for life. You will gain a better understanding of who you are, what you stand for and what makes you unique.
Reflect on Your Values and Beliefs
The first step towards regaining your personal identity is to reflect on your values and beliefs. By examining your values and beliefs, you can gain insight into what is truly important to you, and use this information to guide your decisions and actions.
When we make a decision or take action that is in alignment with our values, then life flows in the right way for us. Life becomes easier.
Identify Your Passions and Interests
One of the keys to regaining your personal identity is to identify your passions and interests. When you engage in activities that you enjoy and find fulfilling, you can begin to rebuild a sense of purpose and direction in your life.
It’s about remembering the activities you like doing including the ones from your childhood. It’s about acknowledging what energises you. It’s about having the courage to try new things. But most importantly, it’s paying attention to how you feel.
Identifying your passions and interests is an ongoing process, and it’s okay if it takes some time to figure out what truly resonates with you. By taking the time to explore and try new things, you can begin to build a life that is more aligned with your true self.
Explore Your Personality Traits
This is essential in regaining your personal identity because personality traits are unique to you, and they make you who you are. Recognising and embracing your personality traits can help you cultivate a sense of self-acceptance and authenticity.
It’s about becoming self-aware so that you notice how you behave. Reflecting on your values and beliefs so that you can see what is important to you and what motivates you.
By exploring your personality traits, you can begin to embrace your unique qualities and cultivate a sense of self-acceptance.
Understanding your personality traits can also help you make choices that align with your values and goals, and build stronger relationships with others who appreciate you for who you are.
Evaluate Your Relationships
The relationships we have with others can have a significant impact on our sense of self and personal identity. It’s about becoming aware of how other people influence who we are when we’re with them. It’s knowing whether the relationships in our lives are positive or not. It’s about surrounding yourself with people who genuinely support you for you.
This is about you, so take the time to set boundaries that you’re comfortable with and then share them.
By evaluating your relationships and making changes where necessary, you can build a support system that aligns with your values and contributes positively to your life. This can help you cultivate a stronger sense of self and personal identity.

Take Action and Embrace Change
And finally, all this work is great but leads to nothing without action. So, decide what small actions you need to take to move you towards regaining your identity. Each small action you complete will build momentum and allow you to start living a life that feels more aligned with your true self.
Finding yourself again and regaining your personal identity can be a challenging journey, but it’s one that is well worth taking. Remember, regaining your personal identity is not a one-time event, but an ongoing process that requires patience, self-compassion and a willingness to learn and grow.
Ultimately, regaining your personal identity is about reconnecting with the person you truly are and living a life that is authentic and meaningful to you. By taking these steps, you can start living the life you were meant to live and one that feels true to your heart and brings you joy and fulfilment.
