Life will knock your confidence: 5 actions to build your confidence

Apr 17, 2024 | Wellness

Confidence, that elusive trait that makes life’s challenges seem surmountable, yet many of us find it slipping through our fingers. Especially if we’ve just experienced a major shift and life no longer looks or feels how it used to.

Whether you’re battling imposter syndrome, cowering in the shadow of failure or simply lacking self-belief, the truth remains that your confidence, or lack of it, dictates your journey.

Reflecting on my own struggles with confidence, I recall moments where I faltered, where every misstep amplified my inner critic’s voice, casting doubt upon my every move. Conversely, when I’ve embraced the present with a level of self-assurance it has led to clarity, focus and even joy amidst life’s uncertainty.

I believe that being confident, unapologetically, starts with knowing and embracing who you are. It’s this self-assurance that propels us forward, empowering us to tackle new challenges head-on, undeterred by uncertainty.

As I’ve said before, confidence is like a muscle that can be nurtured and strengthened over time. The journey begins with cultivating habits that bolster your confidence and mean that you can navigate life with certainty.

Building resilience

Embracing a Growth Mindset

Our mindset shapes our reality. A fixed mindset imprisons us within the confines of perceived limitations, while a growth mindset sets us free to evolve and grow.

To cultivate confidence and foster success, embrace a growth mindset. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, view failure as a stepping stone towards success and welcome feedback as a different perspective that could be helpful.

Self-Compassion: A Beacon of Confidence

The words we speak to ourselves have immense power. Amplifying our inner critic diminishes our self-belief, while practising self-compassion fuels confidence, resilience and optimism.

In moments of adversity, extend yourself compassion. To do this I encourage you to recognise any setbacks as learning experiences, acknowledge the effort that you are applying and be decisive in which action will help you move forward.

Celebrate Your Triumphs

We all must acknowledge our victories, regardless of the size, as this bolsters our confidence and reaffirms our potential for future success.

This means making celebrating your accomplishments a habit. It’s about taking pride in your progress, indulging in self-appreciation and letting your successes propel you forward.

Choose Your Circle Wisely

Our social environment influences our confidence and outlook on life. It’s important to surround yourself with individuals who uplift and inspire you, which means steering clear of those who sap your positivity.

Consciously curate your social circle and gravitate towards individuals who fuel your growth.

Prioritise Self-Care

Self-care helps to form the foundation of confidence. By nurturing our physical, mental and emotional well-being we are also fostering our sense of self-worth and confidence.

Making self-care a non-negotiable part of your daily routine is so important. It can’t be an afterthought. It has to be something that you naturally do. Whether it’s a brief stroll or a moment of quiet reflection, prioritise activities that replenish your spirit.

Building confidence is not a one-time achievement. It is something that we need to constantly work on and build.

Take this as your invitation to be kind to yourself, celebrate your victories and continue forging ahead. With perseverance and dedication, you can cultivate confidence and attain the success you desire.
