Master Your Mindset: Is It Time To Take Control And Own Your Day?
You have more control than you realise
Some days, you wake up and it feels like your brain’s been hijacked by the ‘I can’t be bothered’ brigade.
You stare at your to-do list, sigh, and wonder if anyone would notice if you just hid under a duvet all day.
Sound familiar?
Yes, those days happen. To everyone. Even me.
What makes the difference is how you handle them. You don’t have to surrender to the ‘what will be, will be’ mindset. You don’t have to let one unexpected twist ruin everything. You don’t even have to react in the way you normally would.
You have a choice. And that choice is more powerful than you know.
The Power of Choice
I work with people navigating some pretty big life transitions—redundancy, divorce, retirement and returning to work after time away. The common thread? They all feel stuck. Like life is happening to them rather than for them.
Setbacks don’t define you.
Your response to them does.
And that’s where mindset comes in.
I see it all the time. Someone loses their job and immediately thinks, I’m not good enough. No one will hire me now.
Someone goes through a breakup and tells themselves, I’ll never find happiness again. That kind of thinking keeps you stuck. It chips away at your confidence and self-esteem before you’ve even had a chance to take a step forward.
So, how do you turn things around?
How do you shift from feeling stuck to feeling in control?
Pause Before You React Respond
When something doesn’t go to plan, you may be tempted to react. This might be frustration, panic or even defeat.
Instead of jumping straight into those emotions, take a breath. Give yourself space to choose your response.
Ask yourself, What’s the best way for me to handle this right now? That moment of pause can change everything.
Challenge Your Thoughts
Your brain is a storyteller, and sometimes, it tells you absolute nonsense.
Thoughts like ‘I’m a failure’ or ‘This always happens to me’ aren’t facts. They’re just well-rehearsed lines your mind has picked up over the years.
Challenge them. Ask yourself, ‘Is this true? What’s another way to look at this?’
Coaching is all about breaking these patterns and rewiring the way you see challenges.
Show Yourself Compassion
If your best friend was struggling, you wouldn’t tell them to just get over it, would you?
You’d offer kindness, encouragement and allow them to unload. So why are you any different?
Self-compassion isn’t a weakness, it’s essential. Give yourself the same grace you’d give to someone you care about.
Take One Small Action
Confidence doesn’t come from thinking about doing something. It comes from doing it. If you’re stuck, take one small action to move forward. Something that you know is achievable.
Send the email, make the phone call, write the plan. Small steps lead to momentum and momentum leads to change.
Focus on What You Can Control
You can’t control the economy. You can’t control what other people do. You can control how you show up, what you focus on and the way you respond to challenges. That’s where your power is. Use it.
