Mindset Matters: The Words You Use Are Creating Your Reality
Have you ever stopped to really listen to the words you use every day?
Not just the words you say out loud to other people, but also the words that run through your mind when nobody else is listening.
It’s those little comments you make about yourself, the assumptions you make about what is possible and the stories you repeat without even realising you are repeating them.
Because the words you use are more powerful than you know.
They can be the difference between feeling stuck and moving forward. They can be the difference between believing something is impossible and taking the first step towards achieving it.
And the thing is, most of us don’t choose our words consciously.
We allow them to come out because they are familiar. You know exactly what I mean. It’s thoughts we have had for years. Those beliefs we have collected from our experiences, from other people, and from the moments in life where things didn’t go how we wanted them to.
Yet every time you say “I’m too old”, “I’m not good enough”, “I don’t have what it takes” or “This is too difficult for me”, you are reinforcing a belief about what you can and cannot do.
What you might not realise is that your mind listens, and then your actions that follow comply with those words. So there is no need to be surprised when your results reflect those words.
The words you choose can either create your future or keep you stuck. Let me explain what I mean.
Imagine two people are faced with the same situation.
They both want to start a new business, and they both have the same fears. They are feeling the uncertainty of this new situation they’re entering. And yet, the words they choose to describe what’s about to happen are different.
One person thinks: “I’ve never done this before. I’m probably going to get it wrong. Maybe I’m not cut out for this.”
Whilst the other thinks: “I’ve never done this before, yet I can learn. I can ask for help. I can figure this out one step at a time.”
The situation hasn’t changed. The challenge hasn’t changed. The only thing that has changed is the language they are using.
And that language changes how they feel, which changes how they behave, which ultimately changes the results they create.
This is something I work on regularly with my clients because often the thing keeping them stuck isn’t their ability, their experience, or their potential. It is the story they have been telling themselves.
The good news is that stories can be rewritten, and here are three ways to use your words to create the life you want
Become aware of the words you are using
Before you can change your mindset, you have to become aware of what is currently happening, which I know sounds simple, yet it is one of the most powerful things you can do.
Most people are not consciously choosing their thoughts instead they are reacting to them.
Just because you have a thought, it doesn’t mean it is true and that you should believe it.
How often have you thought or said, “I’m not confident enough”, “I’m not ready”, or “I always get things wrong”?
Probably too many.
That’s why the first step is simply noticing.
Start paying attention to the language you use throughout your day. Notice the words you say when something goes wrong, the way you describe yourself and the conversations you have inside your own head.
The reason this is useful is that awareness gives you a choice.
When you realise you are saying something that is keeping you stuck, you can decide whether you want to continue believing it.
A practical way to do this is to keep a note on your phone for a week. Every time you catch yourself saying something negative or limiting, write it down and do it without judgement. Simply notice it because once you can see the pattern, you can start to change it.
Imagine how different life would feel if instead of automatically believing every negative thought, you paused and asked yourself, “Is this actually true?”
That one question can completely change the direction you take.
Ask yourself: Is my language serving me or limiting me?
Not every thought you have is a fact. This is something many of my clients discover when we work together.
They come to me believing that the reason they are not achieving what they want is because they lack confidence, time, knowledge or ability. Yet when we explore their thoughts, we often find that the biggest barrier is the language they are using.
There is a huge difference between saying: “I can’t do this” and “I don’t know how to do this yet.”
The first statement blocks your way, whereas the second statement creates opportunity.
The word “yet” creates possibility, and when you are faced with a challenge, start asking yourself: “Is this thought helping me move forward or keeping me where I am?”
Because the language that limits you often feels like protection. It feels safer to tell yourself you cannot do something because then you don’t have to risk failure, rejection or disappointment.
The problem is that it also stops you from creating the life you actually want and achieving the goals you set yourself.
Using more empowering language doesn’t mean pretending everything is easy; it means choosing words that help you find a way forward.
Reframe the way you see yourself and your situation
Reframing is one of the most powerful mindset tools because it allows you to look at something from a different perspective.
The situation stays the same, and yet you get to decide what it means.
For example:
* “I failed” could become “I learnt something that will help me do this better next time.”
* “I’m behind” could become “I’m on my own journey and I can take the next step from where I am.”
* “I’m not confident” could become “I’m building confidence by doing things that challenge me.”
When I work with clients, this is often where the biggest breakthroughs happen.
We look at the thoughts that have been holding them back and question whether those thoughts are actually true, whether they are helping them, and what a more useful way of looking at the situation could be.
Because the goal is not to ignore reality. The goal is to stop allowing one difficult moment, one mistake, or one fear to define what is possible for you.
You have more power than you realise
The words you use every day are shaping the way you see yourself and the world around you. They influence the decisions you make, the actions you take and they influence whether you move towards the life you want or stay exactly where you are.
The secret, which really isn’t a secret at all, is that you get to choose. You get to choose the words you repeat, the thoughts you give attention to and whether your language creates limitations or opportunities.
Because once you realise that the power is with you, life starts to feel different. You stop waiting for someone else to give you permission. You stop looking for the perfect moment. You start believing that maybe, just maybe, what you want is possible.
And that is where everything begins.
