Setback

Wouldn’t it be great if life went according to plan?

It would be predictable.

It would feel effortless.

It would be stable.

No surprises. No hurdles. No setbacks.

The truth is, life does include the odd curveball now and again. Whether it’s a setback at work, or navigating a tricky life transition, it can feel like the ground has been ripped out from under you.

I get it. I do.

It can feel impossible to move forward when things aren’t going your way.

What if I told you that the way you handle this setback is all about your mindset?

Yes, your mindset.

It’s your secret weapon for bouncing back and moving forward with confidence, even when it seems tough.

When life doesn’t go to plan, your thoughts can either work with you or against you. It’s easy to fall into panic mode or start thinking “I can’t do this” or “This is never going to work out”.

Trust me, I’ve been there.

It feels like the weight of the world is on your shoulders.

And here’s the good news: You get to choose your thoughts. Your mindset is within your control. You don’t have to let fear and negativity take over.

I work with my clients to help them shift their mindset, build their confidence and improve their self-esteem during life transitions. Whether it’s navigating redundancy, returning to work after maternity leave or simply facing a personal setback, these tools are what get them back on track.

Here are five tips for bouncing back from a setback. These are the exact strategies I use when coaching clients, and they can help you too.

Acknowledge the Setback, Don’t Ignore It

It might feel easier to push your setback to the back of your mind. After all, who wants to dwell on something that feels overwhelming?

Ignoring the setback only makes it linger.

You can’t move forward until you’ve acknowledged where you are. When we ignore challenges, they grow in size and power. So, take a deep breath, acknowledge what’s happened, and permit yourself to feel whatever you’re feeling. Whether it’s frustration, disappointment or fear, it’s okay. You’re human.

Shift Your Thoughts – You’re in Control

Once you’ve acknowledged the setback, now comes the hard part, shifting your mindset.

If you catch yourself thinking “I can’t do this”, replace that with “I can do this” or “This is a challenge and I’m capable of overcoming it.”

When I work with clients, we talk a lot about mindset. It’s the foundation of everything. The way you think will determine the way you feel and the way you feel will determine the actions you take.

If your thoughts are filled with negativity, your actions will reflect that. If you shift to positive, empowered thinking, your actions will follow suit.

Yes, it’s simple and it takes continuous practice.

Take Small Steps – One Day at a Time

Rome wasn’t built in a day. And neither is confidence, resilience or recovery from a setback. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, break things down into manageable steps. Each small win will build your confidence and self-esteem.

I often work with clients on setting small, achievable goals. By breaking down the bigger picture into bite-sized pieces, you’ll feel more in control and empowered. This also helps you build momentum, which is key when you’re navigating a challenging transition.

Focus on Small Wins

When facing a setback, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the thought of overcoming it. This can seem distant and the journey to get there might feel daunting. This is why focusing on small wins is so important.

Celebrate those little victories, the ones that may seem insignificant to others and are a big deal to you. Whether it’s making one positive decision today, taking a step forward or simply showing up when you feel like retreating, these moments add up.

I encourage my clients to recognise these small successes, as they help build momentum and remind them that progress is being made, even when the path ahead still feels unclear. When you focus on what you’ve achieved, no matter how small, you’ll find the motivation to keep going.

Ask for Support

You don’t have to go through this alone. Whether it’s a coach, a mentor, a friend or even a support group, reaching out for help can make all the difference. It’s not a sign of weakness,  it’s a sign of strength.

Asking for support can provide you with new perspectives and fresh ideas that you may not have considered.

When my clients work with me, they find clarity and strength through our conversations, and they realise they’re capable of far more than they thought.

You have the ability to bounce back from any setback. It’s all about your mindset, the way you look at the situation and the steps you take. So, the next time life throws you a curveball, take a moment to breathe, choose your thoughts and move forward one step at a time.
