Back to Work, Back to You: How to Return to Work After Maternity Leave with Ease

Return to work mum

You adore your little one, don’t you?

Yet there’s this niggling feeling inside.

A part of you misses the buzz of the workplace. The satisfaction of using your skills, the focus on something other than nappies and nap schedules and that feeling of accomplishment that comes from being more than “Mum.”

And then the guilt sneaks in.

What if leaving your baby at nursery feels like too much? What will others think? Are you still as sharp as you were before?

Let me tell you something. You’re not alone in these thoughts and they are not the truth.

The time you’ve spent raising your child hasn’t diminished your value. If anything, it’s strengthened it. Maternity leave has equipped you with patience, resilience and problem-solving skills that rival the best in business.

These qualities aren’t just useful in the workplace, they’re game-changers.

Confidence

So, what if you could head back to work with confidence?

Imagine feeling sure of your decision, knowing you’re not just returning for yourself but also setting an example for your child. Showing them the strength in pursuing your ambitions is powerful.

This is where I come in.

Coaching with me is about turning down the volume on that inner critic, rediscovering your strengths and stepping back into work with your head held high.

Let me share five tips to help you take the first steps back to work, feeling sure of yourself and ready for this new chapter.

Ditch the Mum Guilt

Let’s tackle this head-on. Mum guilt can be paralysing, can’t it?

You worry about balancing your child’s needs with your own.

The truth is, putting yourself first doesn’t mean you’re putting your child last. Returning to work shows them the value of self-worth and ambition. It’s not about choosing between being a good mum and a career. It’s about embracing both roles with pride.

Reconnect with Your Strengths

You’ve been out of the workplace for a while and it’s easy to forget just how brilliant you are.

Spend some time listing your skills. Not just the ones from your previous job but those you’ve gained during maternity leave too. Patience, problem solving and quick decision-making. Sound familiar?

Silence the Inner Critic

That little voice in your head telling you you’re not good enough? It’s time to put it on mute. Start by challenging the negative thoughts. Ask yourself, “Is this true?” Nine times out of ten, it isn’t.

Get Practical About the Transition

Returning to work doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Explore flexible options like part-time roles, job shares or remote working. Planning ahead can ease the transition for both you and your family.

I often encourage my clients to map out their ideal working week. Seeing it on paper makes it feel achievable.

Seek Support

You don’t have to figure this out alone. Speak with other mums who’ve returned to work. They’ll reassure you that it’s possible and worth it. Coaching is another powerful tool to help you navigate this change.

When we work together, it’s not just about giving you a pep talk. It’s about equipping you with practical tools to rebuild your confidence and create a roadmap that suits your life.

You Can Do This

Standing at a crossroads in life can feel overwhelming, yet it’s also an opportunity. You’re not the same person you were before having your child. You’re stronger, wiser and more capable.
