Are you sleepwalking through life?

Sleep walking

Do you feel like you’re sleepwalking through life?

It’s easy to get swept along with life. Go on autopilot. And how does that make you feel?

Numb? Indifferent? Out of touch?

It’s as though you’re living life as if you’re in a trance. Or just going through the motions of your daily routine. Maybe, it’s all about adhering to the demands of the day.

Oh my goodness, that feels heavy.

Instead, I invite you to live more purposefully. To actively choose what the day will bring, how the day will look and what you will do.

The responsibility of how life is for you sits with you. Why would you give that responsibility to anyone else?

Surely you wouldn’t?

So how can you turn it around?

I know that I am at my best when I’m in my flow. Just like water running down the river, I find life easy when I’m in flow. I am able to just get on with things without resistance.

However, life is not always like that.

There are moments when we feel like we are hitting our heads against a brick wall or pushing against a locked door.

It’s at that point that you have a choice to make.

You can either keep pushing, which gets you nowhere and leads to frustration.

Or you can choose an alternative route.

You can choose the route that best serves you. The route that will actually help you achieve what you want and need.

The thing is, we have so many choices nowadays that it is easy to get confused and be overwhelmed. So instead of choosing what we need and want, we decide to try and do everything. That’s when life takes over and we surrender to the treadmill of life.

I know what that feels like. Wanting to get involved in everything. Being attracted to all new projects, just like a magpie is attracted to shiny objects.

It’s great to have a full life filled with variety. But, not if all of a sudden you feel like you have no time. Or that your time has been hijacked by stuff that you have no interest in. Or that you are unable to spend time doing the things you really want to be doing with the people who are special to you.

What is the point?

However, you do have the freedom to choose how you spend your time and so really live life.

It’s about pausing, reflecting and then choosing your next best action. Knowing yourself as best you can to make the right decision for you. Here are some tips to help you.

Know what you like

Rather than focusing on the shoulds, coulds, and woulds. Put yourself at the top of the list and ask yourself, what do I like? What are the things that put a smile on my face, make my heart sing and put a spring in my step? Then bring more of that into your life.

Know your strengths

Rather than focusing on what you can’t do, focus on what you can do. All the things you’re good at. The things you find easy. The things that you don’t really have to think about. The things you can do quickly.

Say no

Rather than trying to please everyone or be everything to everyone. Learn to be selective. It’s okay to say no. It’s not personal to whoever is receiving the no. It’s just about what’s right for you. And your priority is to serve yourself then others.

Ask for help

Rather than trying to do everything, because you can, share the load. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. It’s not about whether you’re capable or not. Asking for help is the intelligent thing to do. You don’t have to do everything, so ask for help.

Be ready to learn

Rather than accepting what you know, get curious. Be open to new ideas. Ask why. Become intrigued. Learning doesn’t stop once we finish our education, it is something that should continue throughout our life. The world is continually changing and so there is always something new to learn.

The decision to sleepwalk through life is yours. To always be on autopilot is yours. To feel numb to what is going on is yours. Yes, there may be challenges, but the way you think, respond and speak is within your control.

Are you ready to wake up?
